Which Items Are And Are Not Worth Buying In Bulk At Costco
Don’t Buy Kirkland Signature Laundry Detergent
Costco is not just known for its great deals, it is also known for selling high quality products under its own Kirkland brand. However, though they are generally good buys, there are exceptions, and one of those exceptions is the Kirkland Signature Laundry Detergent. This is one case where you are better off going with another brand.
The cost is not the issue here. Rather, the issue is in the skin problems that people have when using this detergent, as well as clothes that get ruined. On top of that, there is the Environmental Working Group’s verdict that the detergent has a negative environmental impact despite previous claims that it is environmentally friendly.
Buy Frozen Fruits And Veggies
If you want to eat healthy, it is a good idea to give most of the frozen food sections a miss at grocery stores. However, the exceptions are the frozen fruits and vegetables. Because these are flash frozen shortly after being picked, they can sometimes contain as many if not more nutrients than fresh fruits and vegetables do, being that those have a huge lag time from when they are picked to when they are eaten.
Frozen fruits have a different taste than fresh ones, but they are still delicious on their own, with yogurt, in smoothies, and in many other ways, and frozen veggies are great for soups, stir fries, and many other uses. Costco has a plethora of options at a low cost, oftentimes lower than buying them fresh, and you don’t have to worry about buying too much because they never go bad.
Don’t Buy Fresh Fruits And Vegetables
Costco has good deals on fresh fruits and vegetables, and the quality is quite good as well. However, it is best to buy fresh from another store where you can choose your quantity. Even if you are paying more per kilogram, it is worth it because chances are you will just see your produce from Costco going to waste, as it is unlikely you will be able to finish it while it is still good.
There are definitely occasions where it makes sense to buy fresh produce from Costco. If you have a very large family at home, perhaps you can actually go through an enormous box of grapes or a container of spinach before it all goes bad. If you are having a party or cooking industrial quantities of something for some reason, then you can go with the large sizes. Otherwise, stick with the long lasting frozen foods at Costco, and get your fresh ones somewhere else.
Buy The Kirkland Signature Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Extra virgin olive oil is not just one of the healthiest oils to cook with, it is also one of the most delicious. However, it can be quite pricey, and quality also varies considerably from brand to brand, with much of what is on the market not even being proper extra virgin olive oil. That’s why buying it at Costco is such a great choice.
The Kirkland Signature Extra Virgin Olive Oil is a brand that many chefs swear by, and it is even recommended by Samin Nosrat whose cookbook “Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat: Mastering the Elements of Good Cooking” and its corresponding Netflix series have made her a culinary icon. On top of that, Costco’s olive oil has been scientifically verified as being one of the few brands on the market that is legitimate, according to a study done at UC Davis. On top of that, with $19 buying you two liters, it is more affordable than the competition.
