Cars are undoubtedly costly to purchase, but where they really give you financial stress is in the maintenance. No matter how much you plan for such fees, there are always surprises that come in and make you wish you had more money set aside for such occasions.

While you don’t want to neglect being on top of repairs and maintenance, as you can end up paying greater fees down the line if you wait to take care of issues with your car, it is still helpful to have DIY hacks at your disposal when it comes to taking care of your vehicle. Such hacks can also improve functionality without you having to pay for expensive bells and whistles. Read on for four hacks to help you improve your car.

A Faster Way To Defog Your Car

A fogged up car can be a huge frustration if you are in a hurry and hardly have time to spare to wait for it to defog, and of course it is too dangerous to drive with a foggy window. However, you can accelerate the defogging cycle with this easy trick. First get the heat blowing on its highest setting. This will get the moisture out of the air. Once the heat gets flowing, turn the AC on, which will work to dry the air.

After the AC gets working, go back to heat, turn off the air recirculation mode, and open the windows to let cold air get inside the car. The air will continue to dry, and the fog will be eliminated much more quickly than the defrost feature in your car can accomplish. The process is a bit complex to remember, so write it down if you have to, but once you get the hang of it you will find it to be a fast and easy solution to your fog woes.

Put Pool Noodles In Your Garage

This is a hack that has been in use for decades, but still many people have yet to adopt it. People’s garages are sources of many dings in their car both in the front and in the sides. That’s why you should deck out your garage with soft edges so that if you drive too far ahead or if you open your doors too wide, you will hit something that won’t leave a mark.

One of the best solutions here is to use pool noodles. They are cheap, and they will effectively soften the blows of any hits your car makes to your garage walls. They are easy to hang or attach in another way, and with bright colors they will stand out even in a dark garage.

Use Toothpaste To Clean Your Headlights

Toothpaste turns out to be effective in more ways than just cleaning your teeth. One very good use for them is cleaning your headlights. Cloudy headlights are not just an unpleasant appearance, but they are also a danger to yourself and others as you won’t get as strong and clear of a light in the dark. When driving at night, you want to make sure you have a bright, clear path ahead of you, and that’s where toothpaste comes in.

Because toothpaste is abrasive, it can clean your headlights well, and because it is meant for your mouth, it doesn’t have any of the harsh chemicals that many cleaning supplies have which will damage your car. It is also useful at filling in cracks for the same reason. You don’t need any expensive cleaning products, just some regular old Colgate will do the job.

Extend The Range Of Your Key With Your Head

This may sound far-fetched, but you can use your own head to extend the range of your key’s electronic capabilities, as if you have psychic powers. If you have walked away from your car and forgot to lock it and are no longer in range, try putting the key under your chin and opening your mouth.

If you do this, you may find that the key’s range is extended. This is because your head basically acts as an antenna for the key, with your bodily fluids acting as a conductor. Is this entirely safe? Well, maybe you shouldn’t do it every day, but from time to time it’s probably harmless, and it’s definitely worth it if you can’t find our car and are out of range.
